Community Outreach
The Tufts University Police Department is undertaking a self-initiated process to reevaluate, recommit, and renew our focus on strengthening community-police relations. Therefore, TUPD will promote and support a department-wide commitment to the Community Oriented Policing and Problem Solving (COPPS) philosophy.
The COPPS philosophy uses a systematic approach to building partnerships through community engagement and collaboration for problem-solving strategies. Altogether, COPPS can proactively address all immediate conditions that give rise to public safety issues.
Additionally, TUPD will incorporate elements of COPPS deep into the fabric of the organization to influence all aspects of the department. This includes strategic planning, the recruitment and selection process, training, performance evaluations, and promotional decisions. Moreover, all officers at each rank play key roles in supporting the organizational transformation and commitment to the COPPS philosophy.
This initiative is an ongoing process that requires periodic re-evaluations and a commitment toward identifying and/or pursuing the best practices. Through our partnerships, we can create a culture of prevention through collaborative problem-solving.
